The Dalmation is still a very popular dog and still very much a children’s favorite and makes a great family dog. It loves to be around people and gets on great with the family children. It also makes a good guard dog as it is very wary of strangers.

This type of dog is full of energy and is an outstanding runner. Be prepared to give the Dalmation a good deal of exercise, each and every day as well as regular grooming and lots of attention, otherwise, its needle-like hairs can become a real pain. Disney movies assisted in making the Dalmation very popular, which had both positive and negative impacts. Positively people became very aware of this breed but from a negative angle, an increased popularity led to many families acquiring the Dalmation and later finding that it was too much for them to handle.

The number of unwanted went through a sudden increase.

If you are interested in the Dalmation or are considering one, then ensure you do your due diligence. We have had the pleasure of owning this breed for the last 9 years and training many others over the last 12 years. Ours has brought a great deal of joy to the whole family. We have also had the pleasure of training several others right from 6weeks old and upwards.

If you own one, dog training is a must, to at very least establish a basic level of obedience.
There is nothing particularly different about the Dalmation, they are a very trainable breed and we find that they respond particularly well with a food reward or incentive. This dog can be a challenge to own if you do not give them the high energy outlet that they really need and enjoy. Their size can vary considerably from 40 pounds to 80 pounds so if possible take a good look at the parents to get a good idea of what to expect.

A little dog training goes a very long way with this breed, making ownership a much more pleasurable experience. If you are considering the Dalmation as your next breed of dog to own, it is really up to you to see if you are a suitable family to own such a dog. It is certainly a breed at the top of our list.
