There is a large variety of freshwater tropical fish that you can add to your fish tank but my two favorites are Mollies and fancy guppies. These fish are livebearers meaning that instead of laying eggs, they give birth to a little tiny fish and they are, in fact, quite easy to breed even for a novice aquarist.

Mollies

A Molly is a great fish for a beginner hobbyist. These fish are fairly hearty and will withstand adversity and conditions well so if you make a mistake you can have a good chance of you for surviving. You want to be sure that you have a least a 15 gallon tank and you have a good heater as these fish like the temperature to be between 70 and 82°F.

A dirty fish tank is not only an eyesore – it is also a health hazard to your fish, to yourself, or to your family. It is important to clean your fish tank regularly and keep water conditions perfect for your pet fish. Cleaning your aquarium filter is one of the critical steps. The three types of filters – mechanical, biological, and chemical—require different maintenance regimens.

Mechanical filters

Mechanical filters, which usually include pads or sponges, can be maintained by rinsing the pads every so often, depending on the level of nitrates and stocking system of the aquarium. The higher the levels, the more often the sponges need to be cleaned. Generally, you can rinse the pad or sponge every other week. It is beneficial to rinse the sponge with aquarium water so that beneficial bacteria are not lost.

As with many hobbies or interests we all start out as novices. This is true if you want to buy some fish and you need a tank to put them in. This article will give you some advice that you can use when deciding which fish tank should you choose.

1. Space for your fish tank - How much room do you have for a tank. Buying a big fish tank for a tiny space may take away from your enjoyment if you are always bumping into it. Fish tanks can add to the natural beauty of a room when they are allowed to blend into it. You will need to know the amount of space you are working with before you shop for a fish tank.

In a way, your aquarium is a simulated ecosystem— to maintain it, you must recreate what the natural environment does to keep fish alive and healthy. Supplying oxygen to the fish is one of the two most important things in recreating the ecosystem, and constant flowing water is the other. To simulate the effect of flowing water, aquarium pumps are needed.

A good aquarium pump keeps the water flowing, which is important for the air inside the tank to circulate and to allow the water to flow to the filter and remove contaminants.

The two types of pumps

The Discus is a large freshwater cichlid, native to the Amazon River in South America. They were first discovered/described by Dr. J. J. Heckel, an Austrian zoologist, in 1840.

His name is today used to describe the “original” Discus variant. They are increasingly difficult to come by, since most Discus Fish available today has been bred in captivity, but occasionally you’ll find some imported Heckel Discus in the pet shops.

Originally the Discus had three colour variations: Green, Brown and Blue. However, with the Discus becoming more popular among fish keepers, and a lot of money going into research and development of different strains of Discus Aquarium Fish, the list of colour and pattern variants is nearly endless.

A freshwater tropical fish aquarium can be a wonderfully peaceful and ever-changing decorative item in any room but many people never get to experience them because they simply are afraid that it is too much work to set them up and maintain them properly. If you want a fancy looking goldfish that has an unusual characteristic and you might consider the Oranda goldfish for your aquarium. This fish has a beautiful metallic scaled appearance and comes in a variety of colors from yellow to bright red as well as an interesting chocolate color and a pure white with a red cap.

The interesting characteristic of this goldfish is that they have a bumpy growth on the top of their head which develops when they are a couple of years old. This growth is called a wen and is an unusual, but somewhat appealing characteristic. While this differentiates the Orlando from other goldfish he is similar in many other ways including his paired anal fans and dorsal fin.
